Movie Review THE WAILING 哭声

Synopsis

An old man appears in a peaceful rural village, but no one know when and why.  As mysterious rumors begin to spread about this old man, the villagers dropped dead one by one. They grotesquely kill each other for inexplicable reasons. The village is swept by turmoil and the stranger is subjected to suspicion.

Review

A movie which put you in suspense almost from the start of the show. With mysterious death surrounding the village, possessed little girl, a Japanese man living in a Korean community all add up to more suspense for this movie. It is definitely worth watching especially you thought that you finally knew what is going on but the ending make it impossible to know the truth because the truth just can be one of the many possibilities. That’s what make it so exciting to watch. A relatively long movie. I was in fact struggling on my seat not just because of the intense suspense but the coldness of the air-con in the cinema. Be sure to bring along a warm clothing into the cinema.

The movie also demonstrated the love of a father for his daughter. The father, a police officer was a relatively cowardly person but given that his daughter was possessed, he would find ways to help her daughter recovered. You can see how much the father sacrifices himself for the sake of his daughter. The fatherly love has turned him into a courageous person.

There are a number of mysterious characters in the movie. A mysterious lady who appear during the beginning and at the end of the movie. Another mysterious Japanese man who live in the forest and appear in semi-naked, running and hunting down animals. Chicken and goats were used for sacrifices during the rituals. Occasionally, crows appeared in large numbers which signifies bad omen.

It is definitely a good movie to watch. I shall rate it at 3.8 / 5. The movie will be in cinema from 28 Jul 2016.

A fun shot with Canon EOS M10 and Rilakkuma at Keong Siak

Whether it is casual or professional work as a photographer, I have yet to experience the joy of toy photography. The art of photographing toy which imitate life is known as ToyTravel (Nui-Dori). Definitely something new. Walking around Keong Siak area, in this part of Singapore Chinatown Historic District, armed with a Canon M10 camera, together with Rilakkuma, I was into story creation for every photo I shot of Rilakkuma. In the early days, Keong Siak area was a well know red light district. It has now turned into a historic district with cafes, restaurants and even wedding studio.

Thanks to Canon who have collaborated with Rilakkuma, a popular Japanese character to allow us to photo some of the cutest moments with Rilakkuma. Canon M10 simply make everything easy and very much lighter than my big heavy DSLR. I was glad to use the M10 for the shoot. We have about 1.5 hours to walk, photograph and explore the area. Bringing Rilakkuma into life with our photos, will be the challenge for the day. At the same time, the DSLR quality of the Canon M10 make selfie so easy to shoot with it's 180° Tilt-type Touchscreen LCD+

Canon launched the special edition EOS M10 box set bundled with a limited edition 24cm Rilakkuma plush toy to inspire creativity among all social media users. The initiative aims to spur users to incorporate the ToyTravel ( Nui-Dori) trend artistically in their photography.

At the end of the shoot, we had our lunch at Banana Tree. Dessert such as the Flower Pot Pudding look really interesting. My first thought was to bring it back to present it to my wife. Anyway, I finished the pudding. It was really an art piece.

REVISED : DAZZLING NEW SONG & DANCE MUSICAL GLITZ & GLAMOUR TO PREMIERE AT MARINA BAY SANDS

Singapore, 1 July 2016 – Be transported into a bygone era with a spectacular dance, drama and music production with tales from Old Shanghai to Fragrance Bay. Aptly titled, Glitz & Glamour, this stunning example of musical theatre by Dama Asia Productions has a distinct Asian flavour, reviving the rich legacy of popular Chinese music spanning from the era of Old Shanghai, the Silver Screen of Shaw Brothers and Cathay cinemas. The production makes its Singapore debut at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands from 11 August for a limited season.

Tickets are now on sale.

Performed in the style of a docu-tainment, the talented cast bring a spectacle of dance and musical classics such as heart-warming songs from the evergreen Golden Chinese Oldies (shi dai qu).

Glitz & Glamour weaves together two parallel stories that explore themes of celebrity, nostalgia, musical history and comedy in an entertaining display of theatrical flair. The plot is narrated in English and highlights the rise of the shi dai qu genre during the 1930s to 1960s. The life of the protagonist, Budding Rose, a sweet village girl, unfolds against this historical backdrop. The story of Budding Rose is a classic tale of a country girl leaving her home to fulfil her aspirations of stardom in the big city. Young and inexperienced, she enters Shanghai’s seedy nightclub scene, competing against stars like Lady Star, to seek her fame and fortune, and vying for attention in love.

The cast for the Singapore premiere includes singing sensation and theatre stalwart, Tan Soo Suan, who will play Budding Rose, and Liow Jun Yi as The Man. They join Evelyn Toh as the Lady Star and Dominic Luk will play the Secret Admirer.

Tan Soo Suan’s recent performances include Larger Than Life, I Have a Date with Spring and Butterfly Lovers – The Musical at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, and Evergreen (A Tribute to Barbara Streisand) at the Theatre Lounge Café in Kuala Lumpur. Her rendition of Eternally was featured in Tsai Ming-Liang’s film, I Don’t Want To Sleep Alone, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival 2006.

Liow Jun Yi is a tenor who graduated from Malaysian Institute Of Arts. He has won numerous singing awards across Malaysia including a Gold Award in 11th China-ASEAN Arts Festival, and the Festival of Asian Arts. Liow performed in the leading role of Liang Shan Bo in Butterfly Lovers, which received to rave reviews. His other theatre credits include I Have A Date With Spring (2009, 2010 & 2015), The Moon Speaks For My Heart (2011 & 2013) and In Perfect Harmony - A Malaysian Musical Journey (2011).

She has won numerous vocal awards including Grand Finalist in International Vocal Competition 2004 in China, Grand Champion in the Malaysia Vocal Competition (2004), Grand Champion in the Malaysia Singapore Vocal Competition 2004, 3rd Prize in Festa Canzone The Art Song Vocal Competition 2005. Toh’s stage credits include the opera Marriage of Figaro, Tunku, The Perfect Circle, The Moon Speaks for My Heart, Siddhartha and Princess Wen Cheng.

Dominic Lucien Luk studied classical music and performing arts at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore with a focus on vocal pedagogy. He moved to Boston to pursue a Master of Arts specialising in music and gender studies, and studied singing for musical theatre with Pamela Wolfe. Luk also trained in choral conducting at Harvard University.
