Journey to 5G: Singtel to deploy Massive MIMO technology at special events

Key 4.5G technology will enhance mobile data speed experience by up to 200%

Journey to 5G: Singtel to deploy Massive MIMO technology at special events Key 4.5G technology will enhance mobile data speed experience by up to 200% Singapore, 3 August 2017 - Singtel today announced plans to deploy Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology commercially on its LTE-Advanced mobile network, to enhance mobile data speed experience by up to 200% at special events for its customers. A precursor to 5G technology, Massive MIMO is an advanced solution used to boost network capacity in highly dense environments.

Singtel will team up with Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE to deploy Massive MIMO technology at the Marina Bay area. For a start, Singtel will roll out the network boost at the upcoming National Day celebrations, with other deployments planned for the Singapore F1 Night Race and the New Year countdown event.

Over 150,000 people are expected at the Marina Bay area to celebrate National Day next week. Singtel mobile customers gathered there will be able to enjoy a better data experience as they share their photos and videos of the exciting performances and fireworks on social media.

Mr Mark Chong, Group Chief Technology Officer, Singtel, said: “On the joyous occasion of our National Day celebrations, Singtel is pleased to be pairing our newly-acquired 2.5GHz spectrum with Massive MIMO technology to expand our network capacity and offer our customers an enhanced mobile experience at this and other special events. We look forward to rolling out new technologies and innovative solutions to support the anticipated growth in mobile data.”

Globally, large crowds gathered at events, such as concerts and festivals, use high volumes of data to share their experiences via real-time videos on social media. This extraordinary behaviour generates a dramatic spike in network traffic, presenting a challenge for operators to provide fast and consistent data speeds.

Singtel has identified Massive MIMO as one of the solutions to the problem. Singtel will use Massive MIMO base stations featuring a large array of 64 antennas that improve spectral efficiency and cell capacity using innovations in radio technologies. The innovative antenna system channels signals to users’ specific locations instead of broadcasting across a geographical area. This multiplies the number of data paths from the cellular base stations, thus increasing network capacity and improving user experience.

Singapore Telecommunications Limited 2 of 2 Company registration number: 199201624D Singtel provides Singapore’s fastest nationwide mobile data speeds at 450Mbps and recently launched 800Mbps speeds in the high-traffic Orchard Road area. In addition to having the island’s widest outdoor 4G coverage as rated by IMDA1 for 10 consecutive quarters, Singtel is also ranked the fastest telco in Singapore by global metrics leader, Ookla.

Watch out for Asia's Got Talent Season 2

In the first Season, I was also invited to their press conference. It was a great feeling seeing the international judges. The second season this year look promising too at the press conference. With the new judge, Jay Park, an award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and savvy entrepreneur, CEO and founder of two successful record labels, will take the coveted hot seat alongside the show’s returning judges, the 16-time Grammy Award-winning music producer David Foster and internationally acclaimed singer and World Music Award winner Anggun.

The three judges, who arrived in Singapore today to start production of Asia’s Got Talent next week, will be tasked with judging hundreds of acts from 17 countries across the region.

Asia's Got Talent may reach a lot of people, but mostly it unifies a lot of countries together and that's what I'm most excited to see - the people. I'm looking forward to being amazed, shocked, motivated and inspired,” said Jay who is no stranger to discovering and developing talent. “I’m excited to be a part of the show, and I’m looking forward to joining the incredible David and Anggun to discover the next generation of Asian stars.”

Commenting on his return to Asia’s Got Talent, the world-renowned producer and hit songwriter David Foster said, “Asia really impressed me in the first season. The talent was truly world-class.  However, this season I set my sights even higher and I expect to find the next Asian international superstar.  I’m also excited to team up with the gorgeous Anggun again and to work alongside Jay.”

Anggun, who recently completed over 30 sell-out concerts in France and Belgium and recently received a gold sales award for her latest French-speaking album in France added, “I may live in Paris, but my heart is in Asia. I love seeing emerging talent from this part of the world. I wish every act all the very best for a great performance, and I hope that Asia’s Got Talent can be the launching pad for their dreams to take flight.”

The record-breaking series, which set new ratings records for the English general entertainment genre during its run in 2015, will return to AXN in October. Over the course of 10 captivating episodes – comprising five judges’ auditions, three semi-finals, the finale and the results show – contestants will battle it out for the grand prize of USD100,000.

Virginia Lim, Senior Vice President and Head of Production, Content and Marketing, Sony Pictures Television Networks, Asia, said, “We are thrilled with the judges’ table this season as each judge brings their own style, voice and skillset to the show. Jay has a massive fan base in Asia, so AXN viewers will be excited that he has been selected to join an already powerful judges’ table featuring David Foster and Anggun.

“While the first season of Asia’s Got Talent on AXN rocked the region as the number one show in primetime, the second season promises to up the ante and cement the show’s place as the biggest, most mesmerizing talent contest in the world.”

The series will be hosted by Singapore-based actor/ models Alan Wong and Justin Bratton, whose natural on stage chemistry and witty banter will inject a comedic overtone into the series.

Ganesh Rajaram, General Manager, EVP Sales Asia, FremantleMedia International said, “The first season of Asia’s Got Talent was one of the biggest productions in the world. The series unveiled a host of talent from across the region and fast became a fan favourite with AXN viewers. With Jay Park joining David and Anggun on our judging panel, season two is set to be even bigger and better.”

Asia’s Got Talent is supported by presenting sponsor Traveloka, the leading travel booking app for all flight and hotel needs; and sponsoring partner Great Eastern Life, the market leader in the conventional life insurance business and the largest life insurer in Malaysia by asset size.

Marina Bay Sands, Asia’s leading business, leisure and entertainment destination, is the official venue partner of Asia’s Got Talent.

GOD OF WAR 荡寇风云 Movie Review

During the 16th century, Japanese pirates proliferate along the Chinese coastline. In 1557, the pirates take over Cengang in Zhejiang. After months of futile advances, Commander Yu (Sammo Hung) finally defeats them under the leadership of newly promoted General Qi (Vincent Zhao). The pirates, however, manage to escape.

No sooner has Qi identified the key weakness of the Chinese army than he starts remapping the coastal regions to eradicate the pirates. When he finds the villagers of Yiwu loyal and courageous, he drafts them into his own army which soon becomes a formidable force against the pirates, with tactics developed specifically against them. In 1561, the pirates regroup and once again attack the coastal cities of China. With both the cities of Xinhe and Taizhou under attack, Qi's army is caught between two fires.

Even though most family members of his soldiers are located in Xinhe, Qi makes the tough decision to go to Taizhou and leaves his wife in charge of the fight against the pirates in Xinhe, knowing that the defeat of the pirates’ elite team in Taizhou will bring long lasting peace to the coastal cities.

But one month into the battle of Taizhou, there is still no clear winner and loser....

A veteran Hong Kong director and screenwriter, Gordan Chan has directed many best-selling movies in Hong Kong and China, including Beast Cops, 2000 A.D., Fist of Legend, Painted Skin and The Four trilogy.

VINCENT ZHAO as Qi Jiguang
A Ming Dynasty general famous for fighting against the Japanese pirates, Qi was  revered not for his physical prowess but for his knack of making heroes out of his companions.

Best known internationally for playing Wong Fei Hung in Once Upon a Time in China IV & V, Wushu champion Vincent Zhao also appeared in many action movies and television series, including The Blade and Hero Cheng Sing Kung which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Rooster Awards.

SAMMO HUNG as Yu Dayou
An upright commander who had fought side by side with Qi, Yu was Qi’s boss before Qi got promoted. Since he was not keen on ingratiating with the capital officials, he was repeatedly framed and had a bumpy journey during his army career.

A legendary Hong Kong action actor, Sammo Hung has starred in over 75 and worked in over 230 films. His performance in Painted Face has won him Best Actor at the Asia Pacific Film Festival and the Hong Kong Film Awards. His role in Ip Man 2 also won him Best Supporting Actor at the Asia Film Awards.

WAN QIAN as Madame Qi – Wang
The daughter of General Wang Dongzhi, Wang married Qi at the age of 18. She was no ordinary lady in her generation who would spend her life reciting poetry and painting. Wang had been well trained in martial arts since childhood and was more capable than most men of her times.

Wan Qian was born on May 14, 1982 in Hunan, China, also known as Regina Wan. She is known for Paradise in Service, The Laundry Man and Threads of Time.

The descendant of the shogun who was the mastermind behind the Japanese pirates, Yamagawa was good at long gun operations. Young and inexperienced, he was eager to make his name in the invasion of China.

Keisuke Koide was born on February 20, 1984 in Tokyo, Japan. He is an actor and is known for Cyborg Girl, Kisaragi and Feel the Wind.

The commander of the joint operation of pirates and ronin, Kumasawa was extremely competent in the use of terrain tactics to fight a long and weary war. He aimed to win any battle without a single casualty.

Kurata was born on March 20, 1946 in Ibaraki, Japan. He is an Actor and producer, he is known for Fist of Legend, So Close and Blood: The Last Vampire.

The movie provides audience with a visual treat of war fought in both open ground and tight building area. It is a challenge of war strategy between the Japanese pirates and the Chinese army.

Nowadays, most war movie do not have a strong storyline but this movie choose to be different. It has a storyline filled with love, humor, respects and patriotism. There also the portray of pirates who go for money and women. The movie also try to send a message of respects to women which is uncommon in the early China.

The epic fights are enjoyable to watch. The use of inventive weapon by the Chinese during the war was interesting. I have not seen such a weapon being used in any war film. Is there really such a weapon for close combat. You need to watch the movie to find out what is this interesting weapon.

Overall the movie is interesting and sometimes gripping in some scenes. It just make me sit up with excitement. The subtle humor also contributed to the lighter moments in the movie. Well directed and executed by the actors. I will give it a rating of 4/5. A worthwhile movie to watch if you are Chinese war film fans. It will be showing in cinema on the 1 June 2017.
